Going online and developing an online presence can make a tremendous difference in the success of any business. In today's marketplace, a business simply does not have the luxury of NOT having an online presence. As many businesses have discovered, the difference that can be made through developing an online presence can make the difference between the success and the failure of a business.

Most people today have heard of and even use Twitter. There is a very good reason for that - a strong campaign to develop an online presence for Twitter. Twitter was originally founded in 2006. In the next two years, Twitter had expanded to the point of having approximately 3 million users who use the service each and every month. Today, Twitter is not only popular in the United States but also in Europe as well.

Tesco is another company that has managed to expand largely due to its efforts to develop an online presence. In 2005, Tesco was considered a leader in the UK market, but their sales still only amounted to about 3% of the total sales in the UK. In 2006, Tesco launched what would become known as Tesco Direct in an effort to compete with other competitors. They made more than 8,000 products available from a brand new website and offered the ability to order products online as well as directly from the catalog and by phone. By the fall of 2008, Tesco had expanded its presence in not only Britain but also in Asia, other locations in Europe and the United States. They had also expanded their online market share to 25%.

Napster is another example of how much an online presence can do for a business. Originally Napster was created in the late 1990s by a college student. Throughout the next several years, the progression of the company was marred by various problems, including legal action. Eventually, the company was acquired by Roxio, Inc. Through an aggressive advertising campaign, that included using advertising placements on a variety of web sites, including those of affiliate partners as well as search engines, Napster was able to meet its goals. Today the company boasts more than 800,000 subscribers around the world.

As you can see, developing an online presence can make a significant difference in the success of a company. Whether a company is an established business or one that is just starting out, developing an online presence is an essential.
